phrenic nerves
Add the phrenic nerve, which originates from the anterior rami of spinal nerves C3-C5. It descends along the anterior scalene muscle in the neck and enters the thoracic inlet between the subclavian artery and subclavian vein.

The phrenic nerve lies lateral to the vagus nerve. Trace its course from the superior mediastinum, where it runs between the mediastinal pleura and the fibrous pericardium, continuing into to the inferior mediastinum, and ultimately enters the diaphragm to provide motor and sensory innervation.
