CASE REPORT:

37 y/o male presented to the emergency department after falling on the ice and landing on his right elbow. His chief complaint was extreme pain in his right arm. X-ray’s revealed a mid-shaft humerus fracture.

EXAMINATION:

  • • After further examination it was revealed the patient had significant weakness with wrist extension of the right wrist.
  • DISPOSITION:

  • • The patient was splinted and referred to orthopaedic surgery for a consult. The decision to treat conservatively was made.
  • Why do you think the proximal fracture segment appears abducted?

    Why is the patient experiencing weakness with wrist extension when the fracture is in the arm and not forearm?
